I just finished reading Seth Godin’s new little book “The Dip”. I found it applicable to my personal state as I work on two early stage companies and am evaluating their growth curves to determine if they are (in Seth’s words) in a Dip, a Cul-de-Sac, or a Cliff. Alternately, I have to be a bit introspective as well. Is it me?
Seth reminds us of a passage from the Declaration of Independence “all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.” In other words its’ easier to stick with something we are used to, even if it is not meeting expectations. I didn’t recall this passage and I doubt if many of us really do remember it it, but I found it applicable and an understanding of an aspect of our behavior which has not changed that dramatically in over 200 years.
We all need to look at what we are doing, in our careers, life and family to confirm we are not suffering the accustomed. We will be happier for it!
